Female
Meaning:
“pledged to God” (in Hebrew)
Etymology:
This given name comes from the Greek name Elisabet (spelled Ελισαβετ), which is a variant of the Hebrew name Elisheva (spelled אֱלִישֶׁבַע). Both forms appeared in the Bible. According to the Old testament Elisheva was Aron’s wife. The Greek variant appeared in the New testament – it was John the Baptist's mother's name. In England, it gained popularity in the 16th century, probably due to Queen Elisabeth I. This name was also borne by Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, who is the patron saint of hospitals, nurses, bakers, brides, dying children, exiles, homeless people and widows. Her feast day is celebrated on 27th March.
Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (St. Elizabeth) is the patron saint of catholic schools. Her feast day is celebrated on 4th January.
