History & etymology:

The name Julie (in this particular spelling) was introduced to English-speaking countries in the 20th century as a French form of Julia. However, the name had been present in English language long before that. The earliest written record of the name Juliet can be found in William Shakespeare’s famous play ‘Romeo and Juliet’(1596).

There are several possible origins of the name Julia; still, all of them lead back to ancient Rome. According to one version, it stems from Roman proper name Iulius (from Greek ioulos: ’downy-bearded’). It could have also been derived from the name of Jupiter, Roman god. Last but not least, the name Julia could originate from Latin word iuvenes - youthful.

The most popular patron of the name is a martyr, St. Julia of Corsica. She was a religious, humble noble-born woman. When she was young, her city was invaded by pagans and Julia was taken into slavery. She accepted her fate as the Bible dictated and served her master well and devotedly.

Once, the master took her to a pagan festival. Julia refused to join in to the celebrations and started to pray to God. This way she revealed herself as a Christian. Her act offended the local governor, who, despite her master’s pleas, decided to execute her. Julia’s life could only be spared is she rejected God, yet she refused to do that. Consequently, the governor had her hair torn off her head, her breasts cut off and finally had her crucified.

In Catholicism, St. Julia is commemorated on 24th May.
