History & etymology:
Kevin is a name of Celtic origin. It is a combination of cóem, meaning ‘kind, gentle, handsome’ and gein: ‘birth’. The Old Irish Cóemgein developed into Caoimhín. From there, the name made its way to England as Kevin.
The patron saint and the earliest known bearer of the name is St. Kevin (or St. Cóemgen), a 6th century Irish hermit. He chose to live in a cave, wear animal skins and sleep on the stones. Later in his life he abandoned his solitary hiding place only to go on a pilgrimage to Rome, barefoot. He brought numerous relics to his hometown. St. Kevin is believed to have lived to be 120 years old.
