Male
Meaning:
‘Famous in war’ (from Old High German: Hluodowig)
History & etymology:
Lewis is a medieval English form of the French name Louis, ultimately derived from Old High German (Hluodowig) via Latin (Ludovicus).
In modern English, both spelling variants, Lewis and Louis, are used alongside, although Lewis remained the preferred form in the British Isles, while Louis gained more popularity in America.
The first patron saint of the name to be canonized was Louis IX, the king of France who reigned from 1235 to 1270. He was well-known for defending Catholic faith and French clergy. Louis took part in two crusades and one war with England. After his victory, he made restitution to the Englishmen who had lost their property.
Louis died of dysentery at the second crusade he led. He is commemorated on 25th August.
