Gender:
Male
Meaning:
Protection, helmet (from Germanic: Wilahelm; will- : ‘will’ , -helm: ‘protection, helmet’)
History & etymology:
The name Liam emerged in the 20th century from a short form of Uilliam, the Irish version of William.
Liam came into fashion in the 1990s and its popularity seems to be growing rapidly around the world. However, the opposite trend can be observed in the United Kingdom. There, the name was in vogue before 1996 and its popularity has been decreasing since then.
No saint bore the name Liam. There were, however, a number of saints by the name William. Probably the best known of them was St. William of Gellone, also known as William of Aquitaine. He was a nobleman, a warrior and a monk. St. William is remembered for having fought in defence of Christianity with his cousin, Charlemagne. His feast day is celebrated on the day of his death: 28th May.
