The name Logan comes from a Scottish surname derived from a place name, Logan in Ayrshire. The place had been named, most likely, after ‘logan stones’, also known as ‘rocking stones’ (large rocks which had eroded in such a way that they are finely balanced and can be moved with the slightest touch). In Scottish Gaelic, logan is a diminutive of log, which means ‘hollow’.
The patron saint of the name is St. Logan, also known as St. Illogan of Dillon. He was a prince of Cormac, born around the 5th century. St. Logan is remembered for being a missionary in Brittany. His feast day is celebrated on 2nd February.
