Patron saint of the name is St. Lucy. There is not much evidence of her life. The only information one can be certain of is that she lived in the 4th century and was a victim of Christians’ persecutions. Th rest of her story is a legend, perpetuated by the word of the mouth. According to Christian tradition, St. Lucy young took a vow of chastity but her mother arranged for her to marry a pagan. Lucy refused, which made her fiancé furious.
As a revenge, he wanted to sell her to a brothel but, to everyone’s surprise, there was no force which could push her past the doorstep. Even a couple of oxen were of no help. Another version of the legend has it, that Lucy gouged out her eyes to mar her beauty.
Then, Lucy’s fiancé tried to have her burned at stake but the wood could not ignite. Finally, a sword took St. Lucy’s life. After her death, her eyes were miraculously restored to her face.
