Meaning of the name Mila
Gender:
Female
Meaning:
Dear, kind (from Slavic: milu, mila or miła)
History & etymology:
Historically, the suffix -mila was added to Slavic names in order to form a diminutive as in Lyudmila (Lyuda + ‘-mila’, meaning favour of the people). The suffix derives - most likely - from Polish or Russian and is commonly used in East European countries such as Czech Republic, Slovak Republic or Ukraine.
The name has recently became popular in the English-speaking world due to popularity of Ukrainian-born actress Milena ‘Mila’ Kunis.
There is no saint known by the name Mila. However, Roman Catholic Church venerates St. Ludmila. She was a Czech princess born around AD 860. Influenced by Cyril and Methodius (famous missionaries), Ludmila and her husband, Borivoy I of Bohemia, converted to Christianity. The couple founded a church near Prague and tried to spread Christianity among their subjects.
Ludmila had a conflict over religious matters with her daugther-in-law, Drahomira, who was a pagan. Moreover, they disagreed on the issues connected with the upbringing of Ludmila’s grandchildren. Their conflict escalated to such an extent that Drahomira had Ludmila strangled with her veil.
Ludmila was buried inside a city wall, not in a proper grave. Legend has it, that a blind man recovered his sight upon touching that wall.
St. Ludmila’s feast day is celebrated on 16th September.
