History & etymology:
The name Sebastian comes from the Greek translation (sebastos) of the Roman epithet of Ceasars: augustus, meaning ‘venerable’.
A city in Asia Minor was named Sebaste (or Sebastia) in honour of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus Ceasar. Since then, the word Sebastianos was used when referring to an inhabitant of Sebastia.
The earliest saint who bore the name Sebastian was a 3rd century Gaul martyred in Rome under the rule of the Roman Emperor Diocletan. Legend has it, that his body was found in a sewer by a Christin woman who had a vision telling her to bury his remains.
