History & etymology:
Skylar (and its variant: Skyler) comes from a Dutch word denoting a scholar: shuyler. The name Schuyler was introduced to America by Dutch settlers. At first, it was adopted as a surname. Then, because of popularity of senator Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), it started to be used as a given name.
The name underwent a change in spelling to make it appear more familiar to English language speakers. The new spelling was modeled on the name Tyler and the initial part Schuy- got replaced with Sky-.
