Gender:
Female
Meaning:
lotus (from Egyptian: sšn),
lily (from Hebrew: shoshan)
History & etymology:
Susan has been the most common English spelling variant of Susanna since the 18th century.
Susanna comes from the Hebrew name Shoshannah (‘lily’, also: ‘rose’), which in turn stems from the Greek Sousanna, ultimately derived from Egyptian word sšn, meaning ‘lotus’.
One of the several saints by the name Susanna is described in the Bible in the Book of Daniel. St. Susanna lived in the 6th century BC and was a beautiful married woman. Tempted by her beauty, two Jewish elders wanted her to become their mistress. When Susanna rejected their advances, they falsely accused her of adultery. Subsequently, Susanna was tried, unjustly found guilty and sentenced to death. She is a remarkable example of bravery as she would rather die than commit a sin against God and betray her husband.
Her feast days are 11th August and 1st November.
