Timothy ultimately derives from the Greek name Timotheos, meaning 'honouring God'. The name was introduced into English from Latin (Timotheus) via French (Timothée). Timothy came into common use as a given name in England only after the Protestant Reformation.
The patron saint of the name is St. Timothy, a 1st century Christin martyr born to a Greek father and a Jewish mother. St. Timothy was a close friend of Apostle Paul and a recipient of his two epistles included in the New Testament. He was stoned to death because he refused to worship the Greek goddess Artemis.
St. Timothy’s feast day is celebrated on 26th January.
