Valeria is a female form of Valerius, a masculine given name, historically used in Rome as a family name.
There is direct association between the name Valeria and the adjective valiant. These two words are cognates, ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European root -wal meaning ‘to be strong’. From there, it evolved to mean ‘power’ and ‘to rule’ in many languages, e.g. Old English: wealdan, Old High German: -walt, -wald, Old Norse: valdr, Old Church Slavonic: vlasti.
There are many early saints by the name Valeria. One of them is a 2nd century martyr, St. Valeria of Milan. It is disputable whether she had really existed or not. According to the legends, she was married to St. Vitalis and had two sons: Sts. Gervase and Protase. Together with her husband, she encouraged other Christians to remain faithful to God. For that she was beaten to death by the pagans. Her feast day is celebrated on 28th April.
