The name comes from an Old High German Erchanbald, which is a compound of erchan (meaning “genuine”) and bald (meaning “bold”). It was brought to England by the Normans, however, in the Middle Ages, it became very popular in Scotland. It has a lot of diminutive forms, like: Arch, Archy, Archie, Baldie.
