The name Lucas and its English variant Luke stem from Latin and are used alongside in the English-speaking world. Lucas has been borrowed directly from Latin. The name is a cognate of another Latin name, Lucius, meaning ‘the bright one’, from the noun lux: ‘light’.

According to some sources, Lucas could have come from the Greek name Loukas, which means ‘from Luciana’ (a place in southern Italy) but there is no credible proof of such etymology.

The best known patron saint of the name is St. Lucas, the writer of one of the four Gospels, physician and Apostle Paul’s loyal companion. The way his Gospel is written indicates that he was preoccupied with fate of the poor and the sick. Luke seems to have been an advocate of social justice and equality of women. Luke’s Gospel contains more detailed descriptions of Virgin Mary’s life than the other Gospels.

St. Luke is a patron saint of physicians and surgeons. His feast day is celebrated on 18th October.
