Layla is the name of Arabian origin and means night. It became popular as a given name in Arabia and Persia in the 7th century after a series of romantic poems dedicated to a woman named Layla had been written by Qays, Arabic writer.
In 1970, Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon wrote a song ‘Layla’. It was performed by Derek & The Dominos. The song soon became popular and so did the name Layla.
There are no saints by the name Layla but St. Leila is commemorated in Catholic Church, especially in Ireland. She was a noble lady born around AD 650 and a niece of king Tholomond. Information about St. Leila’s deeds is scarce but she is known to have dedicated her whole single life to God.
