Levi is a Biblical name. In the Old Testament, St. Levi was the third son of St. Jacob and his less favoured wife, Leah. The meaning of his name (joined, associated) reflects Leah’s hope to be finally appreciated by her husband: ‘Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons’ - Genesis 29:34.
St. Levi was a prophet and the founder of a Jewish class of priests, the Levites.
In the New Testament, Levi is a byname of the apostle Matthew.
