The name Paul derives from the Roman family name Paulus, meaning ‘small, humble’. The root pau-: ‘few, little’ stems from the Proto-Indo-European.
The name was popular among the early Christians in medieval Continental Europe because of St. Paul, the Apostle of Jesus and the author of numerous Biblical epistles. He was born Saul but took the name Paul at his baptism. He is remembered for his missionary work and great charisma which enabled him to convert a great number of Jews to Christianity. Having refused to stop preaching, St. Paul got imprisoned three times and finally sentenced to death by the Emperor Nero.
St. Paul’s feast day is celebrated on 29th June.
