Meaning of the name Rose
Gender:
Female
Meaning:
Flower rose (from Latin: rosa)
Fame (from Old Norse: hrõd)
Horse (from Old Norse: hros)
History & etymology:
Seemingly, Rose belongs to the group of flower names and derives from the Old English rõsa and ultimately from the Latin word rosa. However, despite its connotations, it is much more likely to have come from Old Norse word hrõd meaning ‘fame’ or hros: ‘horse’. At the time of the Norman Conquest is was spelled Rohese or Roese. There are many medieval written records of the latinized form Rohesia.
After the Middle Ages, the name had fallen out of use only to be revived in the 19th century. At that time, the name lost its Germanic connotations and was used with the flower rose in mind.
The patron saint of the name is St. Rose of Lima. She was a daughter of Spanish colonists and lived in the 16th century in Peru. She was the first American-born person to be canonized.
From a very young age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She was known for extreme fasting and penance. In paintings, she is often portrayed with her spiked crown, which pierced her scalp and grew into her skull over time. Her other acts of penance include rubbing pepper into her face to the point of blistering or deliberately burning her hands. St. Rose’s extreme lifestyle caused her die at the age of 31.
St. Rose’ feast day is celebrated on 23rd August.
