The name Ruby comes from the Latin word denoting a gemstone: rubinus. Rubinus stems from the adjective rubeus meaning ‘red’.
Ruby and other jewel names were at their peak of popularity in the Victorian era. The name was also given to boys (still rarely though) born in America in the first half of the 20th century.
There is one patron saint with a similar name: St. Rubra. She was one of a great number of martyrs from ancient Carthage. Her feast day is celebrated on 17th January.
