There are two possible stories behind the origin of the name Savannah. According to one version, it comes from a topographical term savanna, which stems from the Spanish word sabana, which in turn derives from the Taino (Caribbean Native American) word zabana.
Alternatively, the name could have been taken from the city Savannah in Georgia, named by European settlers with a corrupted form of native Shawnee Tribe self-designation: savana.
