Victoria - Names

Meaning of the name Victoria

Gender:

Female

Meaning:

victory (from Latin)

History & etymology:

Victoria comes from Latin and means, as one can easily guess, ‘victory’. It was the name of the Roman goddess of victory. The name’s masculine equivalent is Victorius. The name became popular in the English-speaking world (later than elsewhere in Europe) in the 19th century, at the time of Queen Victoria’s reign.

The Patron Saint of the name is St. Victoria  who lived in the 4th century Italy. Victoria and her sister Anatolia rejected pagan suitors and they got imprisoned. The sisters managed to convert prison guards to Christianity. After revealing themselves as Christians, they were - together with prison guards - starved, tortured and executed.

St. Victoria’s feast day is celebrated on 23rd December.
