Meaning of the name Willow
Gender:
Female
Meaning:
willow tree
History & etymology:
The name Willow (as well as the common noun willow denoting a type of a tree) stems from Old English welig: ‘willow’. The history of the name probably goes even further into the past, to Proto-Indo-European language: prefix ‘wel-’ was used with reference to curved, enclosing objects, which remind of the shape of a willow tree.
There is only one (male) patron saint of the name: Irish martyr, St. Willow (Wyllow) from Cornwall. He spent his life in solitude, fasting and praying and died by beheading. Legend has it, that he managed to carry his own head for half a mile to a bridge, later called St. Willow’s Bridge.
His feast day is celebrated on 3rd July.
