Easter Monday

In USA and Canada, Easter Monday traditions have been dominated by the immigrant culture. Whether these are the Catholic Poles, or whether these are Orthodox Russians, Romanians, Ukrainians or Greeks, they had created customs for the day after Easter Sunday that have been adopted in America in the 20th century. Among these traditions are Dyngus, which is popular in the states of New York and Indiana, and Pysanka, which is a giant painted egg in Vegreville, Canada. They are celebrated on the Monday after Pascha, which is the Sunday after the first full moon succeeding the March Equinox. That is, at least, how Western Christianity observes Easter. The Orthodox religion, on the other hand, views the subject of the date differently. Easter Monday is a day of reflection about Easter holidays for many devout Christians, but it is also a time for relaxation and light entertainment.

Easter Monday is not immensely popular in America, but there are a few events worth noting with regard to the holiday. The Dyngus tradition, which allows all people to pour water on each other throughout the day, had originated from the Chopin Singing Society, a Polish culture organization, already in the 19th century in Buffalo, NY; yet it was widely recognized much later. Its success has been confirmed by its spread to other states, for example Indiana, where in 1968 John F. Kennedy took part in the Dyngus Day parade. There is also a small, typically American custom that evolved around the holiday: the baseball match between two famous colleges in North Carolina, which has been known since the beginning of the 1900s. Americans and Canadians have also adopted the British egg knocking competition (“egg tapping” in America) in the middle of the 20th century. The abovementioned Pysanka has been in Vegreville since 1974, created as a symbol of Ukrainian influences. Lately, there has evolved a new observance in North America – Orthodox Easter Monday – which is not a public holiday, but some employees may appeal for having this day off instead of the Western date.

The holiday is filled with images of the Easter Bunny, eggs and lambs, because its secular appeal is probably the strongest. Slavic folklore is evidently visible among North American celebrations of the Monday, as in the annual Dyngus Day Parade, with its current statute regulated in 2006. Interestingly, most competitions featuring eggs derive from the British culture, where the task to crack the opponent’s boiled egg without cracking one’s own is called egg knocking. There is also the egg race and egg rolling – the last one being a prominent American White House event since the 1990s, though the practice had been around since the 19th century. Moreover, people from the UK introduced North Americans (mainly Canadians) to hot cross buns as the main Easter delicacy. Apart from participating in the communal cultural entertainment, many people use the long spring weekend to spend time outdoors, e.g. playing sports with family, or on a trip.

Easter Monday is not a federal holiday in the United States, though some towns and cities observe it as a free day. In Canada, however, the date is generally a public holiday, with the exception of Quebec. Easter Monday is a holiday for individual families, but also for communities and authorities.
