Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is referred to as the unofficial national holiday of the United States. Every year, the Big Game gathers millions of viewers in front of a TV worldwide. It is the second most watched sporting event in the world, right behind UEFA Championship. This is the day when American football triumphs and attracts all attention. The country’s citizens consume massive amounts of food and drinks and cheer for their favorite team. International businesses fight over the broadcast during halftime in order to promote their products in premiering, expensive advertisements. This is the final game of the regular NFL season, which occurs on the last Sunday of January or, more often, the first Sunday of February. It is a very significant event in the American culture.

American football used to exist within only one National Football League. The importance and fame of the sport grew, however, and new leagues were created. The most threatening rival was the American Football League, with which the NFL considered merging. The leagues decided in 1960 to compete in an annual, final game in which two of their best teams would play so that the year’s winner would emerge. The event’s name originates from the football slang for a bowl-shaped stadium and from AFL’s owner’s presumption that this will be the Big Game – hence, the “Super” Bowl. The first two Super Bowls occurred in 1967 and 1968 and both were won by NFL’s Green Bay Packers; since then, the score has changed into 25 wins for AFL and 26 for NFL. The most victories in history (6) are attributed to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the most appearances (9) to the New England Patriots.

The Super Bowls are not counted by consecutive years, but successive Roman numbers. For example, the most-viewed TV program in American history, 2015 Super Bowl, is recognized by the number XLIX. The term “Super Bowl” is a restricted trademark of NFL, and the commercial airtime during the game break is the most expensive period throughout the year. The Super Bowl Sunday is a gold mine, not only for the organizers but also for the food industry; Americans consume more only on Thanksgiving. Traditional buffet consist of buffalo wings, ribs, potato chips, various dips, pizza, deli sandwiches, popcorn, and chili. More and more football fans decide to celebrate this Sunday at home due to the costs that massive consumption of food and hard drinks may produce. Fully aware of the Super Bowl’s importance, churches often skip the afternoon mass, because there is hardly anyone attending, or use this occasion to organize football charity events before and after the game.

The Super Bowl Sunday is not a public holiday and this affects the Monday after, on which a massive drop of workers’ productivity has been noted. The game celebration includes hectoliters of alcohol, which produces large-scale hangovers and bigger numbers in drunk-driving. The phenomenon of the Super Bowl is uncanny; no television network can compete with the station that airs this football game (rotating between CBS, NBC, and Fox). The NFL halftime show became as famous as the game itself. The most prominent musicians are honored to give a 10 - 15 minute performance during the most-watched program of the year. Everything about the Super Bowl is hyperbolized, even its name. That is why this holiday resonates with the American spirit of greatness.
